The People

The Inupiaq Eskimos of northwestern Alaska have occupied this land for over 12,000 years. The people from the villages of Ambler, Shungnak, and Kobuk are called Kuuvanmiut, Upper Kobuk River People.

Traditional campsites are found along the Kobuk River. These sites are their traditional, hunting, and gathering grounds year round.

Many of the residents still live a traditional life style subsistence hunting, fishing, and gathering. They hunt for big game animals such as moose, bear, caribou, wolf, and wolverine. Fishing is also done year round. You can observe these activities and sometimes participate.
